HAMPTON ROADS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Three industry leaders share details of Hampton Roads' economy's foundation

Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Nov. 30.

Hampton Roads – or Coastal Virginia as Bruce Thompson likes to call it – has three strong pillars supporting its economy: military, tourism and the port.

A Hampton Roads Chamber-sponsored event that brought three subject matter experts from each of the prospective areas to the stage at The Main to share details of their industries’ strengths.

Chamber president and CEO Bryan Stephens said that even while the region tries to diversify its economy, the importance of the business community (public and private sector) is to ensure the three economic drivers continue to grow and thrive.

Stephens shared some cursory stats to help frame the magnitude of the three industries relative to the area’s economy and said the three inject more than $20 billion into the regional economy each year.

“It is responsible for us as business leaders to take a deep dive into these numbers, the impact on our economy and discuss how we in the business community can do everything we can to support these three critical industries,” he said.
